REGISTER NOW! July 2026 General Meeting - Broward Sierra Group

The Broward Sierra Group hosts a hybrid general meeting offering both in-person and online participation. Registration is required to attend. In-person attendees can look forward to a prize question, and light refreshments will be available, with a reminder to bring a refillable bottle. Featured speaker Richard Ramcharitar of Broward Clean Air will explore why zero waste matters, with a focus on advancing practical solutions across South Florida. The program continues with a hands-on Zero Waste Station that walks through sorting materials into reuse, recycling, compost, and landfill categories. An eco action component encourages taking the Solid Waste Authority pledge and communicating support to city commissioners. A mini zero waste swap invites participants to bring usable items from home for others to repurpose, such as kitchen, office or art supplies, textiles, books, small appliances, electronics, and garden supplies. Items remaining at the end will be collected for donation. Ramcharitar is an environmental advocate and community educator who founded Broward Clean Air. His work includes contributions to regional sustainability planning connected to the Miami-Dade County Zero Waste Master Plan and stakeholder outreach for the Southwest Ranches Zero Waste Plan with Abbe & Associates. He has taken part in Broward Solid Waste Authority meetings and in efforts to improve recycling and sustainability at Miami International Airport. Recognized by elected officials, zero waste professionals, and community stakeholders, he has studied approaches throughout the United States and Brazil to help bring community based strategies to South Florida.

Educators and horticulture professionals from Youth Environmental Alliance present a hands-on exploration of how thoughtfully designed gardens can build climate resilience and create pathways for pollinators. The session looks at purposeful planting as a practical tool to curb climate impacts, restore ecological function, and support biodiversity in both home and city landscapes. Through an interactive demonstration of YEA’s CO2 Calamity program, participants examine the carbon cycle, the challenge of atmospheric imbalance, and the ways vegetation stores carbon, moderates climate, and strengthens ecosystems at local and global scales. The presentation links clear environmental science with real-world horticulture, showing how well planned green spaces can help ease environmental stressors. Beyond carbon storage, the program highlights the value of added green spaces and ecological connections, focusing on wildlife corridors and pollinator-friendly habitat within urban and suburban areas. Attendees gain insight into using native species, layered planting, and intentional design choices to improve habitat continuity for butterflies, bees, birds, and other essential wildlife moving through fragmented environments. Blending science, horticulture, and design thinking, it offers a welcoming path for turning gardens into meaningful instruments of stewardship and resilience. Presenters include Laurie Sheldon, an educator, horticulturist, and designer whose public and private sector experience spans landscape architecture, urban planning, construction, and interpretive work. Her projects across Florida include parks, civic places, resorts, and streetscapes, alongside service with the Florida Park Service, and her background in the natural sciences informs learning-rich spaces that honor each site’s environmental and cultural character. Tyler Rosemellia is an environmental educator and horticulture professional with experience in regenerative farming, greenhouse management, and community teaching. As a speaker, she shares practical guidance on sustainable growing, plant care, and local biodiversity, encouraging deeper connections with surrounding ecosystems. Youth Environmental Alliance is a South Florida based nonprofit devoted to building environmental literacy through experience. Its programs combine hands-on science education, habitat restoration, field learning, and community engagement to connect people of all ages with nature while advancing stewardship, sustainability, and meaningful action.
