Breaking the Frame Lecture Series: Abstract Expressionism

A summer installment of Breaking the Frame highlights the rise of Abstract Expressionism and its impact on modern art’s move away from representation. Dr. Terryl Lawrence examines the postwar New York milieu that propelled this style to global prominence, then delves into its two key streams. Action Painting features figures like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline, with paint applied in vigorous, gestural sweeps. Color Field Painting centers on artists such as Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman, and Clyfford Still, using broad, glowing planes of color to invite quiet reflection. The session wraps with a focused visit to Modernisms: Art from the Manes Collection, and coffee and pastries are provided by Muse Café. This program is the second in a four-part summer series tracing the path from representation to abstraction, with a 20 percent savings available when bundling all four talks. Led by Dr. Lawrence, a painter, art historian, and educator with a doctorate in Painting and Art History from Columbia, nine years at the National Academy in New York, a national Humanities grant, and current teaching in Art History and Mythology at Palm Beach State College.

Sunday Morning Drumming Circle

A hands-on drumming circle led by Margaret Ann Lembo centers on intention setting, energy clearing, and guided meditation. It begins with a ceremonial calling of the seven directions using Smudge in Spray, a smoke-free alternative to traditional smudging. The first round of rhythms focuses on releasing what is no longer needed, then the second invites you to envision the life you want and drum that vision into being. To close, Margaret Ann leads a meditative journey while drumming to help you access insight and move forward with confidence. Bring a written list of intentions. Personal drums or rattles are welcome, and instruments will be available for use, including time on a large Pow Wow drum. Pricing is $27 with prepayment or $33 at the door, all sales are non-refundable, and attendance is limited to 12 participants. Guided by the facilitator’s teachings, drumming and rattling can help shake loose stagnant energy across the mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical levels. Replacing what is released with clear, positive intentions supports manifestation, while participation can encourage stress relief, bolster immunity, and foster a sense of community.

Concealed Carry Next Steps Course

Designed for permit holders who are already confident with static range shooting, this four hour intermediate class at Palm Beach Shooting Center focuses on the practical transition to everyday concealed carry. Instruction centers on safe gun handling, a fighting stance, a strong and consistent grip, sight alignment, trigger control, recoil management, and developing subconscious aim. Students explore what to expect before, during, and after a defensive confrontation, how to select suitable defensive ammunition, ways to improve situational awareness and planning, and the mindset needed for self defense. The course also covers holsters, carry methods, belt choices, common carry positions, and how to recognize and work with the body’s physical and psychological responses under stress, with on range coaching and personalized feedback throughout. This class is not intended for beginners or those with limited handgun experience. Participants must be comfortable shooting independently in a traditional lane environment, have fired at least 500 rounds in the past 12 months through the handgun they will use, and be able to operate it confidently, including loading, unloading, showing clear, locking the slide open on semi automatics, and clearing malfunctions. A solid grasp of firearm safety and range etiquette is required. Students must hold a concealed weapons license or provide a recent criminal background check. Bring your unloaded carry handgun, ammunition, a notepad and pen, and an open mind. Required gear includes at least two magazines for semi automatics or speed loaders for revolvers, 150 rounds, wraparound eye and ear protection, closed toe shoes, and clothing that is not a V neck or a tank top. Those without the required equipment will not be able to take part in the on range portion. Class size is intentionally small at no more than five students per instructor, with a maximum of five students, depending on location. The course fee is $175. Full payment is due to the instructor at the start of class by cash or credit. A credit card is required to reserve a spot and will only be charged if fees apply. There is a $25 administrative fee for any schedule change or cancellation, a $75 late cancellation fee for changes or cancellations made within seven days of class, and a $175 fee for cancellations within 24 hours and for no shows. Preregistration through Florida Firearms Training is required.

Start Me Up! - A Tribute to the Rolling Stones

Start Me Up! A Tribute to the Rolling Stones brings a high-energy recreation of a classic Stones concert to Arts Garage, matching the look, swagger, sound, and gear that fans know. From the first notes to the finale, the performance celebrates dozens of timeless hits and the iconic riffs that helped define rock and roll. Lead vocalist Marc Lichtenfeld channels Mick Jagger with stage experience in New York and San Francisco, two best-selling books, and a background announcing world championship boxing and MMA on major networks. Ronnie DeSaram steps into the Keith Richards role after early success in South Florida’s 1970s scene, studio work in Boston and New England, a run as lead guitarist for New York City’s Crossfire Choir under CBGB owner Hilly Krystal, and sessions at the Record Plant before returning to South Florida. Ron Hersey covers Ronnie Wood, drawing on a Florida upbringing in a musical family, early church choir singing, teen band performances, stage appearances with Toby Keith, Three Dog Night, Chuck Berry, and Little Richard, and his work as a South Florida morning radio personality on iHeart Media’s 610 WIOD-AM. Guy Abaldo honors Charlie Watts on drums, having started at 10, performed in Las Vegas by 17 with his brothers across the United States and Canada, spent 25 years performing regularly in New York, and later moved to Florida. Scott Borgmeyer anchors the Bill Wyman parts on bass, returning to music after a corporate finance career and early training on piano, drums, and guitar. Rick Moore brings keyboards and sax in the spirit of Chuck Leavell, with studio work that began at Berklee, touring with The Hot Dark, Patrice Pike, and Spiritual Rez, and experience as a music director with a major cruise line before settling in South Florida. Sean Leahy takes on Bobby Keys with a jazz degree and more than three decades performing across styles, reconnecting with rock and pop roots. Lobster Mini Season

Recreational divers and snorkelers can take advantage of lobster mini-season, a brief window before commercial harvesting begins. This trip partners with Oceans 8 Charters and includes hotel stays at the Hampton Inn in Boynton Beach. The plan features an overnight before diving begins, four dives on the first day, another overnight, then four more dives on the second day for a total of eight dives. Rules and preparation are important. Each participant may harvest up to 24 lobsters over the two diving days. A current saltwater fishing license with a lobster stamp is required, and a lobster gauge must be carried while hunting. Bring capture tools such as a snare, tickle stick, or net, a reliable way to measure size, a secure catch bag, puncture resistant gloves, and at least two Nitrox tanks. Lobster hunting gear can be purchased at Woods & Water. Because mini-season can overwhelm local fill stations and lead to inconsistent fills, the listing recommends bringing eight tanks from home to avoid low or incorrect fills, with refills needed between trips if bringing fewer. Availability is limited. The example cost breakdown totals 790, with a 65 discount for booking the full package, bringing the trip to 725 plus any rentals. Hotel pricing varies by occupancy, room type, and number of nights, and the trip can be split into partial dive or hotel days. Taxes, tips, transportation, and rental equipment are not included. Equipment transport can be arranged for 100, snorkelers and non-divers may ride along for 125 per boat trip, and a professional dive guide specializing in lobster hunting is available for 350 per day. A nonrefundable deposit is required to secure a spot, with the listing noting either a 200 deposit or 50 percent to hold a reservation.

Precision playing meets showmanship for a performance that is both polished and full of spirit.
