Taylor Robenalt: Peaks & Valleys | Museum of Art - DeLand

At the Museum of Art - DeLand, this retrospective surveys Taylor Robenalt’s work to date, presenting porcelain animals, human figures, and botanical forms that unfold like stories in three dimensions. Through layered symbolism and clear narrative threads, her sculptures bridge ceramics and sculpture, using imagery to consider change and renewal. The exhibition invites reflection, encouraging visitors to connect the works with personal themes of identity, transformation, and our collective experience. Robenalt teaches at Ringling College of Art and Design. Her practice balances accessibility with emotional depth, welcoming intuitive engagement. She holds a BFA in bronze casting and stone carving from Southern Methodist University and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Georgia, and her record includes ten solo presentations alongside participation in more than forty international group exhibitions. Admission is free for members, and $10 for future members.

Renegade & Smokin’ celebrates the music of Styx and Boston with a high-energy tribute conceived in 2018 by five friends from South Florida. The show blends blazing guitar work, classic synth sounds, tight harmonies, and a driving rhythm section, creating a concert experience that invites sing along moments to favorites such as Too Much Time on My Hands, Come Sail Away, Renegade, More Than a Feeling, Amanda, and Long Time. Reserved seating is offered, with preferred reserved seats at $40 in the first six rows of the orchestra and two rows in the center balcony, and general reserved seats at $35. A $5 processing fee per ticket applies, and a 6.5 percent state and county sales tax is collected. The Historic Athens Theatre does not have an elevator to the balcony, so balcony seating is not accessible to patrons using a wheelchair or walker. Safely discard paper documents at a complimentary shredding event at Launch Credit Union’s Orange City branch. Both members and non-members are welcome. Bring up to five boxes of paper to be securely shredded and disposed of at no cost. To help everything run smoothly, do not include plastic items such as bags or CDs, and avoid metal or other trash. Remove metal and binder clips, while staples may remain. Place your boxed or bagged materials in your trunk, remain in your vehicle, and a Launch representative will retrieve them. Taylor Robenalt: Peaks & Valleys | Museum of Art - DeLand

Woven with symbolism and narrative, these works connect the languages of ceramics and sculpture to explore change and transformation. The presentation favors clarity of feeling and approachability, inviting instinctive responses and quiet contemplation. Themes of identity and shared experience surface throughout, encouraging visitors to recognize their own unfolding stories within the imagery. Robenalt serves on the faculty at Ringling College of Art and Design. She earned a BFA in bronze casting and stone carving from Southern Methodist University and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Georgia, and her record includes ten solo exhibitions along with participation in more than forty international group shows. Admission is complimentary for members, with a $10 fee for future members.

Breaking Bad Poetry Indy Qualifier

This winner-takes-all poetry slam determines the Indy representative for MainStreet Art and Culture Slam at both the BlackBerry Peach National Poetry Slam in Kansas City, Kansas and the Southern Fried Poetry Slam Festival Indy Competition in Orlando, Florida. As many as ten poets each perform two poems. The opening round order is randomized, the second round runs from highest to lowest based on earlier scores, and the top four advance to a reset final with a fresh draw. The highest score in the last round wins. If there is a tie, totals from the first two rounds are added. If a tie remains, additional unscored rounds continue until a champion is decided. The winner claims the full prize package and the official MainStreet Art and Culture Slam Indy Champion title, including $250, a berth at the BlackBerry Peach National Poetry Slam with a $250 in-competition stipend issued after the first round in Kansas City, Kansas, and a berth at the Southern Fried Poetry Slam Festival Indy Competition with dues covered if needed. The slam may also serve as an audition to select one or more members of the Breaking Bad Poetry national team, at the organizer's discretion. Registration is free. The Chess In Schools Monthly Chess Challenge brings a full day of rated tournament play to the Courtyard by Marriott in Deland. The event features two sections, Adult/Open and Scholastic, with five rounds and a lunch break. Time control is G/25 with a 5-second delay. Entry is $50 for the Adult/Open Section and $25 for the Scholastic Section. Scholastic players who have never been a US Chess member receive a free one-year US Chess membership. The Open Section offers a $625 total prize fund based on 30 paid adult entries, with $313 guaranteed. Prizes are $250 for first, $150 for second, $100 for third, $75 for top Under 1600, and $50 for top Under 1200, with unrated players not eligible for under prizes. The Scholastic Section is for players under 18 and awards trophies to first, second, and third, plus top Under 1000, top Under 700, and top Unrated. One half-point bye is available if requested before round two begins and cannot be changed. Boards and pieces are provided, and players should bring clocks. A $10 processing fee applies to any refund. At Destinations Gift Shop, this Death Cafe gathering pairs tea and cake with open conversation about death. The movement began in England in 2011 and has since reached roughly 100 countries. The aim is to raise awareness, normalize and demystify death and dying, and help people consider how to make the most of a finite life.
