The Franklin Institute Symposium "Sustainable Plastics"

At the University Of Delaware Trabant Movie Theater, a symposium on sustainable plastics brings together Professors LaShanda Korley, Bradley Olsen, and Geoffrey Coates for research-driven talks about building a circular future for polymers and improving how materials are managed at end of life. LaShanda Korley explores the shift from a linear model to circularity, taking on the challenges posed by the diversity of macromolecules and the complexity of plastic waste, the need to lessen dependence on petroleum feedstocks, and the goal of preserving or even elevating material performance. Bradley Olsen honors a pioneer in polymer sustainability and describes how the combined tools of organic and analytical chemistry with systems engineering can address real-world disposal pathways, inform engineering strategies that improve end-of-life outcomes, and weigh biodegradation alongside recycling during design. Geoffrey Coates outlines molecular approaches that support circularity, from creating plastics intended for mechanical recycling to developing routes for chemical recycling and pursuing sustainable options for biodegradable materials.

Graham Parker

Graham Parker emerged from England’s early 1970s pub rock movement and was initially tagged as an angry young man. With his band, Graham Parker and The Rumour, he launched their run with the 1976 debut Howlin’ Wind and built a devoted following. The 1979 album Squeezing Out Sparks earned strong critical attention and broadened his audience in the United States. He then pursued crossover success with solo releases including Another Grey Area in 1982 and Steady Nerves in 1985, and he has continued to tour on his own. In 2011 he reunited with The Rumour, helped along by filmmaker and longtime fan Judd Apatow, who included the band in the film This Is Forty. The group recorded new material for Three Chords Good, released in November 2012, and toured in America and the UK before the reunion wrapped up. Since 2017 Parker has been on the road with a solo acoustic show, and his song Love Comes was featured in the HBO series Crashing, produced and directed by Judd Apatow.

Howie Day

Howie Day brings intimate, high-energy songwriting to the stage, blending emotionally rich lyrics with inventive melodies. His performances often forge a close connection with listeners through thoughtful craft, a playful sense of humor, and a warm tenor that can rise into airy highs while still carrying a gritty, pleading edge. Raised in Bangor, Maine, he started on piano at a young age and picked up guitar as a preteen. By his mid-teens he was writing original songs and gigging throughout New England, eventually becoming a regular at college coffeehouses around the country. He wrote, financed, and released his debut album, Australia, on his own, earning Best Debut Album at the Boston Music Awards. On the road, he refined a hallmark live-looping approach, layering percussion, vocals, and guitar to create the impact of a one-person band. That early success led to a release on Epic Records, Stop All the World Now, featuring the four-times-platinum single Collide. Subsequent albums followed, including Sound the Alarm and Lanterns. With an enduring live show and a catalog of fan favorites, Howie Day continues to deliver moving moments that stay with audiences long after the last note.

John Gallagher, Jr.

Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter and Tony Award winner John Gallagher, Jr. returns to Elkton Music Hall for a homecoming just a few miles from where he grew up in Delaware. He was the first artist to play the venue on its grand opening night, and this appearance brings him back to where that story began. Audiences may know him from The Newsroom, Short Term 12, 10 Cloverfield Lane, and Hush, as well as his Tony-winning turn in Spring Awakening, his starring role in American Idiot, and the recent production Swept Away. Here the spotlight is on his songwriting, with a Gibson J-45 and a red lightning bolt strap. Raised in a family of folk musicians, he wrote his first song at age five and has moved from roots rock and pop punk toward what he calls emo folk rock. Influences include John Prine, Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Westerberg, and Adam Schlesinger, and his songs blend grit and wit with heartfelt, lived-in storytelling. From Rockwood Music Hall on the Lower East Side to venues across the country, his sound draws echoes of the Byrds and the bar-band spirit of Tom Petty. Special guest Hannah Winkler is also featured.

Over nearly two decades, she has carved out fearless honky-tonk on her own terms, mixing warmth with grit, humor with heartbreak, and rowdy spirit with thoughtfulness. Born in Houston and raised in East Texas, she introduced herself with Heartbreaker’s Hall of Fame in 2006 and has since released five critically acclaimed albums while remaining fiercely independent. Her latest record, Rhinestone Requiem, was recorded in Texas and draws on lived experience. It pairs aching melodies and mature songwriting with timeless country foundations that nod to Jerry Lee Lewis, Waylon Jennings, and Loretta Lynn. Beyond the stage, she serves as a trusted tastemaker as the host of The Sunny Side of Life on Outlaw Country and Sunny Side Up on Willie’s Roadhouse on SiriusXM, and she continues to broaden her creative reach as a producer with longtime collaborator and guitarist Harley Husbands. Through it all, she gives voice to both hurt and healing, offering songs that feel like hard-won truth shared by a friend who has been there and made it through.

WXPN Welcomes Southern Culture On The Skids

Southern Culture On The Skids brings decades of high energy rock and roll shaped by a long stretch of recordings and miles on the road. The trio of Rick Miller on guitar and vocals, Mary Huff on bass and vocals, and Dave Hartman on drums has performed together for more than 30 years, maintaining a global touring and recording run since 1983. Their path has ranged from lively North Carolina house parties to late night television appearances on shows like Conan O’Brien and The Tonight Show, from a set at the foot of Mt. Fuji in Japan to performances inside North Carolina correctional facilities. They have shared stages with artists including Link Wray, Loretta Lynn, Hasil Adkins, and Patti Smith. Their songs have surfaced in films and on television, been spoofed by Weird Al, and even featured in advertising for products as different as diamonds and pork sausage. In 2014 the Southern Folklife Collection at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill recognized their work with an exhibition highlighting their music and cultural impact. Onstage they deliver a burst of foot stomping, hip shaking rock and roll that Rolling Stone has described as a raucous party.

Selwyn Birchwood

Selwyn Birchwood delivers a modern take on the blues shaped by being born in Orlando, with family roots in Tobago and the UK, and by a teenage spark after hearing Jimi Hendrix and seeing Buddy Guy live. Immersing himself in the music of Albert King, Freddie King, Muddy Waters, and Lightnin’ Hopkins, he forged a powerful style of his own. At 19 he was mentored by veteran bluesman Sonny Rhodes, who brought him on the road and helped develop his musicianship and leadership. He formed The Selwyn Birchwood Band in 2010 and soon drew national attention by winning the 2013 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. His Alligator Records debut, Don’t Call No Ambulance, earned wide acclaim and received both the Blues Music Award and the Living Blues Award for Best New Artist Debut. Follow-up albums including Pick Your Poison, Living In A Burning House, and Electric Swamp Funkin’ Blues showcase a sound that blends traditional blues with funk, soul, and electrifying guitar and lap steel. Together We Heal - Reclaiming Human Closeness

Feeling disconnected even while constantly surrounded by conversation is common. This immersive weekend focuses on genuine connection rooted in safety and presence, with space for unhurried eye contact and conversations that replenish rather than drain. The experience begins gently with soothing yoga and supportive breathwork that help the nervous system settle so openness feels possible. Guided meditations and restorative practices invite the body to release its armor and make room for ease. Throughout the gathering, thoughtfully designed social games and partner explorations encourage meaningful exchange without pressure. Participants reflect on patterns of protection, longing and hesitation, and experience what honest closeness can feel like in a warm, respectful environment. Creative time welcomes expression beyond words, and simple ceremonial moments help anchor intentions to open, trust and allow. A restorative spa component with warmth, steam and quiet supports deep relaxation, often softening emotional walls as the body softens. By the weekend’s close, many discover a calm truth: connection is a shared strength, and it is okay to be supported.

Men’s doubles teams compete at The Picklr for the official club championship title in a one-day event that begins with organized pool play and finishes with a single-elimination bracket. Seeding is determined through up to four pool-play rounds, with each round played to 11 points and requiring a two-point margin. The top eight teams move on to bracket play. Quarterfinals are a single game to 15 points, win by two. Semifinals are best two out of three games to 11, win by two, and are held at the same time. Gold and bronze medal matches are also best two out of three to 11, win by two, and run concurrently. Pricing is set at no cost for members, 20 dollars for social members, and 40 dollars for non-members. Multiple skill levels are offered, including 2.5 and 5.0 plus at select locations, as well as 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5. DUPR rating guardrails apply, with entries allowed up to 0.250 below a division level and up to 0.500 above it, for example a 4.0 division accepting ratings from 3.75 to 4.50. Ratings may be reviewed in advance and players outside the range can be moved or removed to protect competitive balance. Divisions may be combined to maximize participation. If that happens, results will not be reported to DUPR and medals may still be awarded to overall top finishers and to leading teams from the lower division, with advance notice provided if combining occurs. Live scoring and brackets are run through Swish, and players are encouraged to have the app ready. Scores must be confirmed after each match. Registration is individual, with each player listing a partner’s name in the registration notes. Partner substitutions are allowed until registration closes 24 hours beforehand, and any later changes require club approval and are not guaranteed. Space may be limited, so early registration helps secure a place. For questions, call 302-202-8839 or email newark.de@thepicklrfranchise.com.

Clear Mind, Steady Heart - Mastering Inner Balance

Clarity can sometimes arise not from thinking more but from letting the mind settle. This immersive retreat is designed for those who feel pulled between nonstop thoughts and a heart that is either guarded or overwhelmed, with a focus on practicing balance so it becomes real in everyday life. In the calm setting of Whispering Oak Mansion, the experience centers on recalibration through embodied practices and thoughtful reflection. Grounding yoga helps you reconnect with physical steadiness, while breathwork eases emotional intensity and softens mental noise. As the breath evens out, the heart tends to follow. Guided meditations encourage observing thoughts without getting carried away, like watching clouds drift across a wide sky. Deep relaxation soothes the nervous system so balance is felt, not just understood. Social games and partner reflections reveal how the mind reacts in conversation, then show how responses shift when the body feels steady, making connection clearer and communication gentler. Creative time invites you to define what balance means in your own life, and simple ceremonial moments anchor intentions for calm thinking, grounded feeling, and aligned action. A restorative spa experience with warmth and water supports the release of tension and opens a sense of spaciousness. By the close, you may notice quiet strength within you, clearer thoughts, steadier emotions, and more intentional reactions. A clear mind and a steady heart become learnable skills.
