The Brian Larney Band and more

A melody-packed night at Best Video Film & Cultural Center pairs The Brian Larney Band with The Shellye Valauskas Experience for a pop-forward double bill. The Brian Larney Band centers on songwriter Brian Larney, delivering hook-heavy rock and pop that nods to the guitar-driven sounds of the 70s and 80s, with bright choruses and ringing guitars. Larney handles vocals, guitar, and keys alongside Dean Falcone on lead guitar and vocals, Bob Hibson on bass, and Jim Balga on drums, a lineup that balances muscle and nuance. Larney’s songs have appeared in film and television, and he has shared stages with Cheap Trick, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, and Ellis Paul, with the full band turning those melodic instincts into a tight, energetic set focused on strong songcraft. The Shellye Valauskas Experience, led by Shellye Valauskas and Dean Falcone, crafts power pop that reaches back to standout moments of the 70s and 80s. Expect sparkling melodies and jangly, sharp-edged guitars, echoing influences like Big Star, The Raspberries, and Aimee Mann. Their release History of Panic features catchy choruses, swirly guitars, and instantly engaging melodies. The cover is $10.

Flowers and Flow

A calming, creativity-filled workshop presented by Thistle and Grace Florals arrives just in time for Mother’s Day. Space is limited, and member pricing is available. Over the course of two hours, participants are invited to slow down and connect in a supportive setting. The experience opens with a gentle, breath-centered yoga practice to settle the body and quiet the mind. From there, an introduction to the symbolic language of flowers explores how different blooms can reflect personal intentions and inner seasons. With that inspiration, attendees create a flower mandala using seasonal blooms, arranging color, texture, and form into a living design that nurtures presence and shared beauty. The gathering concludes with a guided meditation to integrate the experience and carry a sense of calm forward. No prior experience with yoga or floral design is needed, and all are welcome to arrive ready to move, create, and enjoy meaningful time among flowers and community.

Kath Bloom & David Shapiro, Mountain Movers at Best Video Sat., May 16

Kath Bloom and David Shapiro share the bill with Mountain Movers at Best Video Film & Cultural Center. The cover is $10. Kath Bloom is a Connecticut singer and songwriter whose songs weave country, blues and folk, carried by a distinctive, wavering soprano. She made a series of very limited releases in the 1970s and 1980s with guitarist Loren Mazzacane Connors. She later stepped back from music while raising a family, training problem horses and teaching specialized music programs for children. Her song Come Here was used by Richard Linklater in the film Before Sunrise, which helped bring renewed attention to her catalog and new work, including a tribute album with contributions from Josephine Foster, Bill Callahan, Devendra Banhart, Meg Baird and Scout Nibblet. Since 2017 she has been recording and performing with New Haven, Connecticut guitarist David Shapiro. Mountain Movers, from New Haven, feature guitarist and vocalist Dan Greene, bassist Rick Omonte, guitarist Kryssi Battalene and drummer Ross Menze. This lineup has played together for more than a decade, debuting on a string of singles from 2011 to 2013. The 2015 album Death Magic on the New Haven label Safety Meeting made the promise of this era clear. A trio of releases for Trouble In Mind followed, with Mountain Movers in 2015 reintroducing the band to a wider audience, Pink Skies in 2018 showcasing a confident approach, and World What World in 2020, written and recorded before the shutdown, shifting the focus toward Dan Greene’s poetic storytelling. The ninth album, Walking After Dark, finds a balance between tightly written songs and expansive improvisations.

Woods w/ Edsel Axle at Space Ballroom

Woods teams up with Edsel Axle at Space Ballroom. Nearing two decades since forming in Brooklyn in 2004, Woods continues to evolve with Perennial, a collection that began as looping sketches from Jeremy Earl and grew into full songs with Jarvis Taveniere and John Andrews, first at Earl’s home in New York and then at Panoramic House in Stinson Beach, California. The album spans 11 tracks, including four instrumentals, where layers of guitar, keys, and drums bloom into bright melodies and subtly off-kilter textures. Pedal steel from Connor Gallaher lends a wintry shimmer to one of the instrumentals, and the band’s work running the Woodsist label and curating the Woodsist Festival underscores a collaborative spirit that runs through their music. Edsel Axle, the solo electric guitar project of North Carolina songwriter Rosali Middleman, shares pieces from Variable Happiness. Recorded at home on a four-track cassette setup, these first-thought, intuitive performances trade vocals for guitar narratives that move from warm circular figures to glowing arpeggios and saturated swells. Patient melodies and a purposeful, percussive touch stretch small ideas into wide, flowing currents. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents at Space Ballroom. This performance welcomes attendees of all ages.

Space Ballroom hosts a full bill presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, featuring Napalm Death with Deadguy, Primitive Man, and Nastie Band. Their songs are often brief and set to lyrics that confront social and political themes, and their impact on heavy music reaches back decades. Metaphysical Movement + Massage: a Full Blue Moon in Sagittarius ritual

Guitarist-vocalist Stacey Dee, bassist-vocalist Linh Le, drummer-vocalist Myra Gallarza, and guitarist Alex Windsor bring songs that confront resilience, loss, recovery, and perspective, including Dead Friends, Strugglinh, See Me Now, Straight Out of Detox, and Note to Self with LA underground rapper 2mex. The album stretches their melodic, hook-forward sound with unexpected turns such as the jazzy Las Ventanas, a dub-tinged Note to Self, and a reimagining of Joe Strummer and the Mescaleros’ Johnny Appleseed. The band recorded at the Compound in Long Beach with producer Antoine Arvizu and Dee’s partner, Migs, then dove into intensive vocal sessions with longtime collaborator John E. Carey Jr., as Gallarza added third-harmony parts and Windsor’s lead work surges on I4NI. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, this bill pairs Bad Cop Bad Cop with Pretty Bitter at Space Ballroom.

Digging Deeper into Ecological Horticulture with Uli Lorimer

Explore how ecological horticulture differs from traditional gardening and why genetic diversity matters during a talk that considers practical questions such as whether cultivated forms of native plants have a place in the garden and how a changing climate should guide plant choices. The focus is on creating and caring for landscapes that work with natural systems. Uli Lorimer, Director of Horticulture for the Native Plant Trust, oversees Garden in the Woods in Framingham and Nasami Farm in Western Massachusetts, both dedicated to native plant propagation and research. His career includes positions at the National Arboretum and Wave Hill, as well as serving as Curator of Native Plants at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. He studies the region’s ecosystems, collects seed from the wild, and introduces new native plants to living collections. An accomplished author and speaker, his books include Tough Natives for Tough Places, A Native Plant Reader, and The Northeast Native Plant Primer. The presentation offers a science-based perspective with guidance on selecting plants that strengthen ecological function while celebrating native flora. Offered in person at CNTR and on Zoom, made possible by the Lois and Herb Isaacson Endowed Lecture fund and the Wild Ones Mountain Laurel Chapter.

Conan w/ Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean, Disfigure at Space Balloom

Conan headlines a night at Space Ballroom with Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean and Disfigure. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, the UK band founded by guitarist and vocalist Jon Davis in 2006 is known for seismic low-end weight, impressionistic lyrics pared to the essentials, and vocals that cut through dark, fuzz-soaked riffs. The lineup features David Ryley on bass and Johnny King on drums. Across five studio albums from 2012 to 2022, they have pursued super heavy tones and expansive dynamics, with Evidence of Immortality adding a brooding atmosphere alongside touches of darkwave and synth. In 2024 they signed with Heavy Psych Sounds, extending a career that has resonated throughout the UK and well beyond. This is an all ages show.
