The Mercy Velvet Project

Co-presented by kamrDANCE and Yale Schwarzman Center with support from Yale Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, The Mercy Velvet Project brings the little-heard 1999 album Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet to life onstage through a fully embodied re-creation. Across all nine tracks in their original order, musicians and dancers move together to examine what makes us human and why community is essential to survival. A queer and femme ensemble confronts the barriers to love, discovering how the act of giving and receiving mercy can open a bridge to wholeness and hope. The album’s story unfolds through tap used as percussion, contemporary choreography, original text, and live instrumentation on bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics. More than twenty-five years after the record’s release, kamrDANCE and collaborators expand its legacy through their identities and today’s political realities, highlighting vulnerability and the shared work of seeking an antidote in mercy that helps lead meaningful lives. Functioning as a rock concert and an immersive sonic experience, the piece underscores how inseparable dance and music can be. Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with this music, inspired by its rhythms and lyrics during living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, working with lyricist and vocalist Deb Lili and guitarist Lou Lili. Together with Musical Director Christie Echols and a team of collaborators, Robbins brings Live in Vain to audiences in a premiere presentation.

Hagaman Library's Special America250-Themed Cookbook Club: Colonial Recipes and Cooking

Celebrate America250 with a bonus Cookbook Club at Hagaman Library that delves into Colonial recipes and cooking. Chefs will offer tasting-size dishes drawn from, or inspired by, real recipes from the American Colonies, and no RSVP is required. Cooking is optional, so attendees who prefer not to prepare a dish can still participate, explore daily life in the thirteen original colonies, and take home practical kitchen tips. Discussion highlights how region shaped the menu... New England featured abundant seafood and wildlife, with lobster considered inexpensive at the time, the mid-Atlantic favored boiling and was known for apple dumplings, and in the backcountry on the frontier and in the highlands, meals often centered on mush made from soured milk or boiled grains.

Greg Mendez

An all ages concert at Space Ballroom features Greg Mendez with Scarlet Rae. Mendez is known for spare, carefully measured songwriting that delivers clear, cutting emotion. His new album, Beauty Land, is his first LP for Dead Oceans and arrives after a self-titled breakthrough in 2023 that followed many years of quietly making music between Philadelphia and New York. Recorded largely straight to tape in a modest Philadelphia home setup, the album balances wry realism and guarded hope, pairing self-scrutinizing stories with pop-leaning melodies, bright and insistent guitars, and a voice that reaches toward choral purity. Beauty Land moves through grief, love, and addiction with quiet focus. Its brief tracks sketch dreamlike scenes and off-kilter characters, from the loping pulse of I Wanna Feel Pretty to toy piano textures in Gentle Love, and a turn in Mary / Dreaming from delicate fingerpicking to a warped pop resolution. Mortality lingers over the record and the arrangements often feel purposefully fragile, whether in the organ tones of Looking Out Your Window or the slowed keys and simple plea for forgiveness in Frog. Moments of connection break through, including harmonies with his wife and bandmate Veronica late in So Mean, offering a fleeting sense of release. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents.

Sandra Cisneros conversation at New Haven Museum

At New Haven Museum, a literary conversation brings together Sandra Cisneros, author of The House on Mango Street, with Victoria Buitron, Zakiya Dalila Harris, Christine Kandic Torres, and Krystal Marquis. The discussion delves into race and citizenship, the act of claiming a place in a national narrative that has not always welcomed everyone, and the intertwined themes of home, displacement, and identity. Together the authors consider how literature can challenge, widen, and complicate our understanding of America and the ways it continues to change. Their books lift up the experiences of Black and Brown women across the diaspora, emphasizing resilience, connection to roots, and a commitment to authenticity.

YuGiOh Genesys Sunday Tournaments

Phantasm Gaming hosts recurring YuGiOh tournaments in the Genesys format where duelists compete for prizes and connect with the local community. Entry is $10, and this event is played with a 100 point cap. Genesys offers a streamlined rule set suited to both experienced and new players. Link Monsters and Pendulum Monsters are not permitted, while all other cards are allowed. Duels use the original field layout without Extra Monster Zones or Pendulum Zones. The usual Forbidden and Limited list is not used, so those cards are legal except for Link and Pendulum cards, and the standard limit of up to three copies per card still applies. Deck construction follows a point system in which some cards carry point values and most cost zero, and the combined total across the Main, Extra, and Side Decks must remain within the cap. The shop serves as a community space for trading card games, RPGs, wargaming, and board games, supporting both competitive and casual play.

Songs of Sedition and Rebellion

At the Pardee-Morris House, historical musician Richard Franklin Donohue explores how Connecticut patriots used song to spark dissent, celebrate triumphs, and offer thanks from the Stamp Act era through the surrender at Yorktown. Performing on a spinet harpsichord and singing, he shares findings from his own archival research, focusing on pieces printed in Connecticut between 1768 and 1783. Many selections pair well-known melodies with newly crafted words that voiced the anger, resolve, and gratitude of the colony’s supporters of independence. The program highlights works connected to John Dickinson’s Liberty Song, William Billings’ Chester, Andrew Law’s Middletown, and popular British tunes retexted for the cause of freedom. Donohue presents the music with close attention to historical context, period instrumentation, performance practice, and language, using pronunciation informed by evidence from Benjamin Franklin and Noah Webster to recreate the sound world of the time. New Haven Museum acknowledges community partner WSHU 91.1 FM for supporting the summer season.

“Why Connecticut 250 Matters” with State Historian Andy Horowitz

State Historian Andy Horowitz presents “Why Connecticut 250 Matters,” a wide ranging talk at the New Haven Museum and part of NH250. Using the 250th anniversary of the nation’s founding as a lens, he explores how understanding the past helps explain the present and inform what comes next. He begins with how the American Revolution shaped life in Connecticut for people across lines of origin, gender, class, and freedom status, including Europeans, Africans, and Americans, women and men, the wealthy and the poor, and those who were free or enslaved. The program speaks both to those who already value Connecticut history and to those who find it uninteresting, offering new stories told in a fresh way. Horowitz underscores why local history merits attention at a time when the field is politically charged and national debates can overshadow community experience, calling for a renewed national story that starts at home and expands our sense of who we are and what our communities can achieve. The lecture pairs with the museum’s exhibition New Haven’s Unfinished Revolutions, an immersive exploration of moments when freedoms in the city expanded or contracted. The exhibition features original artifacts, enlarged photographs, and an interactive experience that connects New Haven to national movements that reshaped ideas about human rights and liberty. Attendees can explore the exhibition before the talk and stay for a reception. Admission to the program is included with regular museum admission.

Conan and more

Space Ballroom hosts a heavy night headlined by Conan with Chained to the Bottom of the Ocean and Disfigure. This is an all ages show presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, and tickets are available. Conan, founded by guitarist and vocalist Jon Davis in 2006, pursue what they call Caveman Battle Doom, a focused quest for extreme weight and minimal, impressionistic lyricism. Over five studio albums released from 2012 to 2022, they have become a reference point for modern heavy music. Their sound is built on physical low-end presence, with bassist David Ryley driving deep resonance, Johnny King’s kick drum moving air, and Jon Davis’ dark fuzz guitar paired with sharp, shouted vocals. In 2024 the band signed to Heavy Psych Sounds, and their 2022 album Evidence of Immortality brought a brooding atmosphere to their full-force approach, weaving in touches of darkwave and synth while keeping their core intensity intact.

Much Ado About Nothing

A town shakes off the shadow of war and spills into the streets to celebrate. Music drifts through open doors, friends plot romances, and the dance floor fills. Benedick strides in with bravado, claiming love is not for him, while Beatrice meets him with a smile that cuts and a quip to match. Their sparring sparks laughter as onlookers delight in every exchange. Then gossip outruns the truth. A ceremony falters, and a young woman is left standing alone where she was just applauded. The community that gathered to rejoice must decide who they are in the aftermath. Much Ado About Nothing bursts with quick wit and precise timing, full of pride, blunders, and careless words spoken when everyone is listening. It explores how shared joy holds up when it is tested in public.
