T.K.'s American CafeBook Talk: “Baldwin: A Love Story” by Nicholas Boggs
A Yale Library book talk features Nicholas Boggs, a bestselling author and Yale alumnus, in conversation with Jacqueline Goldsby, the Thomas E. Donnelly Professor of Black Studies and of English. Boggs discusses Baldwin: A Love Story, described as the first major biography of James Baldwin in almost thirty years. The book follows the intertwined personal and artistic relationships that shaped Baldwin’s life and work, including his mentorship with painter Beauford Delaney, his partnership with Swiss artist Lucien Happersberger, and his collaborations with Turkish actor Engin Cezzar and French artist Yoran Cazac. It explores how the geographic, cultural, political, artistic, and erotic dimensions of these bonds were transformed into art that challenged power and influenced the civil rights movement as well as Black and queer literary history. Boggs previously co-edited a new edition of Baldwin’s Little Man, Little Man: a Story of Childhood with Yoran Cazac, and he holds degrees in English from Yale and Columbia, along with an MFA from American University. His writing has been supported by fellowships and residencies, including at Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center and the Beinecke Library. The Afro American Cultural Center at Yale and the Yale Black Culture Network co-sponsor the event. A signing will follow, with books available for purchase, and participants may bring copies acquired in advance.

Danbury LibraryTheatre of Veterans: Female Voices from Ukraine
An evening centered on contemporary Ukrainian theater features a staged reading of Balance by Alina Sarnatska, a veteran and former frontline combat medic whose dramatic voice grows from lived experience. Following the reading, a roundtable titled Holding On: Women at War and the Search for Balance invites reflection and dialogue. Participants include playwright Alina Sarnatska, Genevieve Chase, a decorated U.S. Army Reserve senior enlisted soldier, intelligence professional, and veterans advocate, Sahraa Karimi, an Afghan-Slovak film director and screenwriter, Irina Esterlis, PhD, Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at Yale University (TBC), and Iryna Solomko Bonenberger, a journalist, documentary filmmaker, and human rights activist. Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript LibraryLocal Author Annie Lisa Discusses Compelling Memoir/Book Signing
Connecticut author Annie Lisa visits The BookSmiths Shoppe for an author talk and signing centered on her memoir, "What My Sister Told Me After She Was Murdered." The book reflects on her bond with her sister, Dr. Teresa Sievers, whose killing drew global attention, and on the connection Annie describes continuing after Teresa’s passing. It blends the shock of a real life crime with a personal account of sisterhood, spiritual growth, and a shared purpose to elevate human awareness. Drawing on experiences that began before the tragedy, Annie recounts how the sisters’ shared interest in contemporary spiritual ideas and complementary healing shaped their path. In the aftermath, she describes messages and guidance she attributes to Teresa, a sense of protection for herself and Teresa’s two children, and insights into who was responsible. The narrative invites readers to consider consciousness beyond the physical and the possibility of transformation through grief. Best selling author and spiritual teacher James Van Praagh has praised the work for showing how loss opened a spiritual calling and for helping others better understand life beyond the physical world and the breadth of human experience. Past hosts describe Annie as professional and authentic, noting that she captivates audiences with vivid storytelling and thoughtful reflections on the nature of reality, the power of the subconscious, and a vision for peace.

College Street Music Hall hosts a powerful night of heavy music featuring The HU and Apocalyptica, with special guest The Rasmus. Presented by Premier Concerts and Manic Presents, this all ages show brings together three distinctive forces from around the world. The HU, formed in 2016 in Ulaanbaatar, introduced Hunnu Rock by weaving traditional throat singing and the morin khuur into thunderous riffs. Their debut, The Gereg, earned major recognition at home with the Chinggis Khaan Order, and their momentum grew with an original track for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a commanding take on Metallica’s Through the Never for The Metallica Blacklist, and the follow-up album Rumble of Thunder that led to landmark festival and arena appearances. They are preparing a third album, further enriching their sound while highlighting Mongolian language and culture. Apocalyptica, born at Helsinki’s Sibelius Academy in 1993, reimagined metal with cellos and rose to prominence with Plays Metallica by Four Cellos in 1996. The group has since sold millions of records, toured the globe, and expanded into original compositions alongside collaborations with artists such as Ville Valo, Bullet For My Valentine, Till Lindemann, Corey Taylor, and Dave Lombardo. Their recent Plays Metallica, Vol. 2, produced by Joe Barresi, includes a fierce rendition of The Four Horsemen featuring Metallica’s Rob Trujillo. The Rasmus add a storied Finnish rock legacy to the lineup. The band formed in 1994, earned early gold records and industry awards in Finland, broke out internationally with Dead Letters and the hit In the Shadows, and continued with chart success and collaborations. Recent milestones include the album Weirdo in 2025, created with Desmond Child and Marti Fredriksen, and Rise in 2022, which featured Jezebel as Finland’s Eurovision entry. The current lineup features Lauri Ylönen, Eero Heinonen, Emppu Suhonen, and Aki Hakala.

Witch Bitch ThriftMy Friends by Fredrik Backman
This event centers on Fredrik Backman’s contemporary coming-of-age novel about Louisa, a young artist who becomes fixated on three almost-overlooked figures nestled within a famous seascape. Years earlier, a group of teens in a coastal town escaped difficult home lives on a deserted pier, passing long summer days with jokes, confidences, and small rebellions that bound them together. From that summer comes a singular painting that lands in Louisa’s hands at eighteen, sending her on a cross-country search to uncover how it was created and to decide its fate. As she draws closer to where the canvas originated, her anticipation and uncertainty grow about what she will learn. The story celebrates the lasting strength of friendship and the enduring influence of art, offering a reminder that happy endings can arrive in unexpected forms.

Shubert TheatreThe Mercy Velvet Project
The Mercy Velvet Project brings the seldom-heard 1999 album Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet to the stage as an embodied re-creation. Co-presented by kamrDANCE and Yale Schwarzman Center, with support from Yale Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies, these premiere performances follow the album’s nine songs in order, uniting a femme and queer ensemble of musicians and dancers to reflect on what makes us human and the communities that help us endure. Across the set, the artists examine barriers to love and discover how offering and receiving mercy can open a path to survival, wholeness, and hope. Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with this music. Her father, Mark Robbins, was Mercy Velvet’s drummer and co-composer with lyricist and vocalist Deb Lili and guitarist Lou Lili, and his guidance helped shape her voice as a tap artist. Now Robbins, Musical Director Christie Echols, and collaborators share the album with audiences for the first time, expanding its legacy more than twenty-five years later through their lived identities and the realities of today. Part rock concert and part immersive sound journey, the production treats dance and music as inseparable. The story of the album unfolds through tap used as percussion, contemporary movement, original text, and live instrumentation on bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics, inviting the company to reveal vulnerability, lift one another up, and search together for the antidote of mercy that leads to a meaningful life.
