Edible Wild Plants and Mushrooms of Spring-Presentation

Thomaston Public Library CT presents a spring program focused on edible wild plants and mushrooms. As the season warms and daylight increases, young shoots, tender greens, blossoms, and a few early fungi appear. This presentation covers how to identify these seasonal foods, gather them responsibly, and prepare them in the kitchen. Highlights include species such as invasive bamboo shoots and the bright, lemony wood sorrel, along with some of the first edible mushrooms of the year. The 3 Foragers lead the talk with a slideshow that features their own photography and recipe ideas. Space may be limited, so call 860-283-4339 to register. The 3 Foragers are a family from southeastern Connecticut with more than 21 years of experience exploring New England’s edible plants and fungi. Their work emphasizes identification, photography, and cooking with both native and invasive species, promoting a family-friendly and environmentally sustainable approach to foraging. Through their blog, Facebook page, and book, they share original recipes and practical guidance to help people incorporate wild foods into everyday meals while encouraging careful harvesting and a deeper connection to nature.

Wake Up Wednesday

Each Wednesday in Hartford, the Greater Hartford NAACP hosts Wake Up Wednesday, a grassroots effort centered on community care, mutual aid, and practical support in the moment. What began as a simple food distribution has grown into a robust weekly outreach serving hundreds of neighbors. Participants can pick up free groceries for individuals and families, enjoy freshly prepared meals such as cookouts and grinders, find clothing for all ages and seasons, and take home household supplies and hygiene essentials. Help is offered without forms or screening, making it easy to get what is needed during a tough week. On-site community partners are present each week with additional resources, including job assistance and reentry support for those with records or employment gaps, legal help from Greater Hartford Legal Aid, harm reduction services through CTHRA with Narcan kits, clean syringes, and overdose prevention tools, as well as housing and recovery options for people seeking stability or treatment. Services are brought directly to the places people already gather, reducing red tape and long trips across town. For many, this weekly gathering functions as a lifeline, a welcoming space where dignity is upheld and neighbors look out for one another so no one has to face hardship alone, week after week. The effort is sustained by community support through donations, volunteers, and word of mouth, and there are meaningful ways for local businesses and residents, including those who have benefited, to give back.

Let’s pour it up on da Pinnacle ⛰️

Enjoy an easy, unhurried hike at Pinnacle Rock along the Metacomet Trail. The route is about 3.5 miles with roughly 449 feet of elevation gain, and the pace is intentionally very slow. Prepare for the trail by wearing ankle-high waterproof hiking boots and bringing trekking poles, hiking pants, moisture wicking layers, and a jacket suitable for rain and wind. Pack tick repellent, plenty of water with electrolytes, and enough food for the outing, including lunch, snacks, and energy bars. Participation is entirely at your own risk. Each person is responsible for researching the route, bringing suitable gear, and managing their own safety and well-being. Organizers and other participants are not liable for injuries, mishaps, or other incidents, and no liability insurance is provided. This coverage applies even to unanticipated situations. By attending, you acknowledge these terms and understand that there are no designated leaders, so you are your own leader. As a cultural note, Cinco de Mayo commemorates the 1862 Battle of Puebla rather than Mexican independence. It is celebrated heavily in Puebla but not widely throughout Mexico, while in the United States its prominence grew in the 1980s and 1990s through beer marketing and has since become a broader celebration of Mexican culture.

Stowe Prize Series: The Phillips Manuscript and “James: A Novel” (HYBRID)

Part of the Stowe Prize Series, this program explores history, storytelling, and the ongoing pursuit of freedom by bringing two works into conversation. The newly discovered Phillips Manuscript, which chronicles the life of Dr. William H. Phillips, is paired with Percival Everett’s award-winning novel James for a focused dialogue. Born into slavery in Virginia in 1841, Dr. Phillips later became a nationally respected minister at Philadelphia’s Shiloh Baptist Church. His life intersects with defining events of nineteenth-century America and underscores the resilience, courage, and intellect of Black Americans before and after emancipation. Everett’s novel reimagines Huck Finn by centering Jim’s point of view. Together these perspectives consider how narrative shapes our understanding of the past and influences the culture we inhabit today. The Phillips Manuscript will be displayed.
