The Weminuche Woodfire GrillSilent Sundays: Silent Short Extravaganza!
Experience a special program of silent-era short comedies brought to life with live piano accompaniment by Adam Swanson. This installment highlights Charlie Chaplin, Laurel and Hardy, and a high-velocity railroad adventure, with each film paired to period-appropriate music performed on DAC’s 9-foot grand piano. The program is family friendly and suitable for children. Easy Street (Mutual Films, 1917) features Chaplin’s Little Tramp navigating a tough neighborhood. After a personal turning point, he signs on with the police, faces down a menacing bully, and takes on a mob, all while hoping to impress a kindhearted mission worker portrayed by Edna Purviance. Double Whoopee (MGM, 1929) arrives from the tail end of the silent era and spotlights Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy as a hotel footman and doorman charged with entertaining a visiting prince. Their assignment goes awry when a young Jean Harlow captures their attention. Recent restorations let these classic antics shine. Chasing Choo Choos (Pathé Exchange, 1927) condenses the feature Play Safe into a brisk short starring Monty Banks. The latter half showcases striking real-world stunts filmed on the San Diego and Arizona Railway, with Virginia Lee Corbin as the capable assistant whose fate hangs on a runaway train rescue. Adam Swanson specializes in vintage American popular music, including ragtime, early jazz, and the Great American Songbook. He holds a bachelor’s in classical piano and a master’s in musicology from the Peabody Conservatory of Johns Hopkins University. His credits include performances and lectures at ragtime and jazz festivals across the United States and abroad, a New York debut at Carnegie Hall at age nineteen with Michael Feinstein, appearances at the Cinecon Classic Film Festival in Hollywood and the Kennedy Center, and concerts in Hungary, Switzerland, Australia, and France. He is the only four-time winner of the World Championship Old-Time Piano Playing Contest. He has collaborated with John Arpin, Ian Whitcomb, and Johnny Maddox, a significant influence on his work. Based in Durango, Colorado, he frequently performs at the Diamond Belle Saloon in the Historic Strater Hotel and directs the Durango Ragtime and Early Jazz Festival.

An instrument petting zoo is available in the lobby before the performance, with San Juan Symphony musicians guiding hands-on exploration of the orchestra’s instruments. Tickets are $5.
