Music and Art: A Symphonic Exploration
Vast swaths of color, jagged flame like forms, and unusual shadows in Clyfford Still’s paintings inspire a concert that asks how these visuals might sound in music. A program of contemporary works features a newly commissioned premiere by London based composer James Clarke, created for this collaboration with Denver’s Clyfford Still Museum and written for the Colorado Symphony. Clarke undertook archival and collections research at the museum to shape the piece, conceived as a kindred spirit to Still’s art where two mediums meet and spark. The program also includes Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, and Adam Schoenberg’s Finding Rothko, drawing connections between symphonic sound and abstract visual expression. Clarke is a pioneering voice in contemporary classical music with a degree in the scientific analysis of music from the University of London and a doctorate in philosophy from the University of Leeds. His teaching has taken him to the UK, Germany, and Austria, and he served as Professor of Music at the University of Baku while also being an Associate Fellow at the Institute of Musical Research, University of London. His works have been performed in major concert halls and contemporary music festivals in over 40 countries, and he is especially focused on the formal and intellectual relationships linking abstract visual art and music.

Mission BallroomForaging Walk with Robin Greenfield
At Sloan’s Lake Park, Robin Greenfield leads a foraging walk focused on the edible and medicinal plants that grow abundantly in and around Denver. For an entire year he is obtaining every meal and remedy directly from the wild, skipping grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies, and even a cultivated garden, and he is traveling to share what he has learned about the freely growing food and medicine all around. Drawing from that experience, he covers how to identify more than ten common local species, how to forage with care and safety, how to harvest in ways that support the plants, and straightforward strategies for getting started. The route is short, typically under a half mile in total and within ten minutes of the starting point, so people of all experience levels can take part. The aim is that participants leave informed and motivated, with a sense of community around foraging. A suggested donation of $10 to $40 supports the nonprofit Regeneration, Equity and Justice, and scholarships are available to keep the experience accessible.
Sloan's Lake ParkRock Art: An American Story – An Evening with Stephen Alvarez
Award-winning author and photographer Stephen Alvarez visits the Denver Museum of Nature & Science for an evening marking the release of his new book, Rock Art: An American Story. In his talk he looks back tens of thousands of years to examine what humanity’s earliest art reveals about who we are and how we evolved. Those who pre-order a copy can have it signed by the author after the presentation. Alvarez has produced acclaimed stories for National Geographic that range from the highest peaks of the Andes to the deepest cave in the world, covering exploration, adventure, culture, and archaeology. His work on the origins of art led him from early human sites along Africa’s southern coast to Paleolithic cave art in France and Spain. Inspired by the power of these ancient creations, he founded the Ancient Art Archive, a nonprofit that uses modern technology to share and protect this fragile cultural legacy. The evening also follows his journey across the American landscape, undertaken in partnership with Indigenous descendant communities, to highlight the depth of this inheritance. Rock Art: An American Story underscores a shared human narrative that links people across time and place.

Unless another option is chosen, bookings default to in person. Tarot readings are offered in 20 minute sessions for $45, 30 minutes for $70, and 40 minutes for $90. Frankie, who uses they and them pronouns, is a tarot and playing card reader, an Italian American folk practitioner, and an ancestral reconnecter. Their path has included almost four years of cultural and ancestral reconnection and seven years of tarot practice. Sessions focus on creating space for clients and offering practical next steps for moving through challenges, with guidance grounded in a deep understanding of the cards. Their study of Italian regional playing cards over the past year draws on a divination approach with roots stretching back about 400 years. The method uses decks tied to traditional games like scopa and calabresella and reflects regional variations found across Italy, from Spanish influenced to Northern, German influenced, and French influenced styles. As with Italian folk traditions, interpretations can vary by family and reader, which lends itself to clear, everyday guidance and direct answers. Spellwork consultations include time to talk through the concern, divination with Italian playing cards, and a collaborative plan for actionable spellwork to address the matter. Frankie’s strengths are rooted in ancestral traditions and folk magic, including work related to protection, banishing, binding and unbinding, blessing, plant allies, spirit interactions, and experiences connected to the evil eye. Each consultation is tailored to the individual’s goals. On Instagram, they are @chaoticwitchaunt.
