Slingshot Improv Trio at Discretion Brewing
Slingshot Improv Trio performs at Discretion Brewing with music shaped by two decades of shared history, deep grooves, and playful chemistry. Bassist Pete Novembre and drummer Bret Bailey first locked in with the funk jam outfit Elephino in 1999, while Bailey and guitarist Matt Hartle launched Shady Groove in 2001. After many gigs together in various lineups, the three focused that long-running connection into a group of their own. Hartle, known from China Cats, Painted Mandolin, Shady Groove, and Grateful Sundays with the Hartle Gold Band, is a Bay Area guitarist with a degree in Jazz Performance whose fluid, soulful style invites comparisons to Jerry Garcia, Carlos Santana, and Steve Kimock while remaining unmistakably personal. Novembre, whose credits include OM Trio, Coffee Zombie Collective, Aza, and Elephino, is a bassist recognized with a Santa Cruz readers’ poll bronze for Best Musician, and his former band OM Trio was voted Best Jazz Band in San Francisco in 2001. Multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Bailey, heard in Shady Groove, Elephino, BlissNinnies, and Cosmic Pinball and raised on New Orleans jazz, brings a rhythmic intuition that lets the music breathe. Together they have shared stages with Stanley Jordan, Henry Kaiser, Melvin Seals, Donna Jean Godchaux, Joe Craven, Ike Willis, and Mark Karan, reflecting a range that roams widely. Their shows are largely improvised, using songs and structures as launch points for open-ended exploration. A familiar tune might appear and then dissolve into new territory, or the night might chart an unexpected path from the first note. The only constant is that nobody knows exactly what will unfold.

Ancestral Healing Retreat | August 28th-30th
Aligned with a rare celestial moment, this ancestral healing retreat unfolds under a deep partial lunar eclipse of the Sturgeon Moon. Guided by the Return to Great Waters theme, it focuses on reconnecting with origins and the vast waters of consciousness while cultivating the resilience to move through deep emotions with grace. As the Earth’s shadow veils most of the Moon and a Blood Moon effect emerges, the atmosphere becomes a powerful portal for releasing outdated patterns and embracing meaningful transformation. With the Sturgeon Moon in Aquarius, the energy supports breakthroughs and perspective shifts that help shed old layers and honor who you are becoming. The program blends traditional Andean despacho offerings and ritual with attentive holistic care. Participants receive nourishing, plant-based meals, comfortable lodging, and experienced support throughout the journey. Sacred medicine ceremonies with Mother Divine, San Pedro, and Father Divine are included, along with despacho ceremonies for alignment and gratitude. One-on-one shamanic consultations are available for those seeking personalized guidance. Pachamama Sacred Paths shares Andes Mountain traditions and shamanic energy sacraments in a contemporary, comfortable setting in Santa Cruz, California.
