An Educating Conversation: Featuring: Bishop Slawomir Szkredka -- "Biblical Commentary as Testimony"

Bishop Slawomir Szkredka leads a thoughtful conversation on biblical commentary as a form of testimony, using Nicholas of Lyra and his Postilla to illustrate how the biblical text continues to speak with vitality. Drawing on treasures from the collection, the program highlights the Archive-Library’s artifacts and reflects on the craft of commentary through this concrete and intriguing example. Presented in collaboration with Saint Barbara Parish and hosted at the Santa Bárbara Mission Archive-Library, the event is part of a series that invites participants to hear from an expert and then continue with a lively exchange of questions and ideas. Light refreshments will be available. Admission is $30 for the public, with a $25 rate for SBMAL members and members of Saint Barbara Parish, and proceeds support the Archive-Library. RSVP is required, and Facebook responses are not counted, so seats are confirmed by purchasing a ticket through the organizer’s website. Bishop Szkredka was born in Czechowice-Dziedzice in southern Poland, began seminary studies in Kraków, continued at SS. Cyril & Methodius Seminary in Orchard Lake, Michigan, and was ordained for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. His ministry has included parish service in Panorama City and Baldwin Park, advanced study at the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome, teaching and formation at St. John’s Seminary, a doctorate in Sacred Scripture, and appointment as Episcopal Vicar for the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region by Archbishop Gomez.

Concierto Íntimo: Andres Vadin Trio

An intimate concert spotlights the Andrés Vadin Trio with a guest appearance by flamenco great Pelé de los Reyes. The trio weaves flamenco heritage with jazz spontaneity and the spirit of world music. Led by Grammy-nominated guitarist Andrés Vadin, the group features Yosmel Montejo on bass and Grammy Award winner Diego Álvarez, known as El Negro, on percussion. Their collaboration delivers music that is grounded in tradition yet reaches toward new horizons. Individually, these artists have performed with Concha Buika, Antonio Carmona, Billy Cobham, Men at Work, Luis Enrique, and Juan Luis Guerra. Pelé de los Reyes, a Latin Grammy-nominated singer and composer, founded Navajita Plateá, one of Spain’s most prominent flamenco fusion bands. Navajita Plateá earned a Triple Platinum award for Desde mi Azotea and captured Song of the Year in Spain with Noches de Bohemia. Seating is very limited, with wine included.
