Bay Con 42/ Westercon 78: The Answer

At the Santa Clara Marriott, BayCon 42 partners with Westercon 78 for The Answer, a fan-run celebration of speculative fiction shaped by dedicated volunteers and a welcoming community. Founded in 1982 by John McLaughlin and Randall Cooper to bring together Bay Area science fiction and fantasy fans, BayCon has grown into the region’s longest-standing fan-operated gathering with a reputation for strong programming and an inclusive spirit. Early leaders such as Michael Siladi and Jay Freeman helped build a solid foundation that encouraged creativity and collaboration. Over the years, the convention has welcomed notable voices in the field, including Joe Haldeman, Harlan Ellison, Steven Barnes, Larry Niven, Peter S. Beagle, and Brandon Sanderson, while artists like Bob Eggelton, Tom Kidd, Mary Hanson-Roberts, John Picacio, Galen Dara, and Elizabeth Leggett have shaped a distinctive visual identity that matches the event’s imaginative tone. As the gathering expanded from its early San Jose roots to larger venues, it ultimately settled into its current home at the Santa Clara Marriott, reflecting steady growth and ongoing community support. The Answer continues a long tradition of themed celebrations that have included Space Flights of Fancy, Alternate Universes and Other Possibilities, The Magic of Now, Women of Wonder, Pure Imagination, and A Convenient Parallel Dimension. In partnership with the West Coast Science Fantasy Conference, this edition brings BayCon together with the seventy-eighth Westercon, extending a relationship that dates back to early BayCon ties with Westercon in 1961 and a return of the BayCon name during the 1968 Worldcon in Berkeley, all in honor of community-driven storytelling and the many possibilities of speculative fiction.

Feed the Hungry People

In downtown San Jose, volunteers meet at St James Park to share vegetarian meals with people facing hunger. This grassroots effort welcomes anyone who wants to help by bringing food or offering funds so meals can be purchased and handed out directly to those in need. A common approach is to pick up vegetarian items from Taco Bell, such as Cheesy Bean and Rice Burritos, Spicy Potato Tacos, or Cheesy Roll Ups, place them in small bags, and bring them to the park for distribution. Water is also provided, and meals are shared with anyone who is hungry, without distinction. Only vegetarian food is used. The organizer is Vincent Amaladoss. Cash support can be sent through Zelle at linktovj1985@gmail.com, and vegetarian home-cooked food donations can be coordinated. For questions or to arrange a food pickup, contact 614-772-2743.

SJBP - The Rose, White & Blue Parade!

San Jose Bike Party will roll with The Rose, White, and Blue Parade, inviting riders who want to participate as part of the group rather than watch from the sidelines. Both the parade and SJBP are celebrating their 19th year, so participants are encouraged to bring bikes, music, decorations, families, and plenty of good energy. Riders will gather on the front lawn of Lincoln High School, where a free bike decoration station will be available. Costumes and decked-out wheels are optional and always welcome. Arrive early if you want time to decorate. Check your bicycle or other wheels ahead of time and bring what you need to take care of yourself, including sunscreen, water, snacks, a parasol or umbrella, and basic repair items like tubes, a pump, and tools. Whole-Body Health Masterclass with Dr. Jen PT

Health expert Dr. Jen PT leads an in-person masterclass where movement meets mindfulness to support whole-body wellness. Learn mindful core training from a Doctor of Physical Therapy with science-based strategies designed to promote health at every age without relying on medications, supplements, or restrictive diets. You will practice precision movement to strengthen your core, protect your joints, build muscle and stamina, and enhance the connection between brain and body. Exercises are low impact, open to all levels of fitness, and participants can choose their own intensity. The curriculum explores why mindfulness matters, breathwork for focus and energy, everyday stretches that make a difference, a streamlined workout you can maintain, nourishment strategies that move beyond dieting, and water-based training that uses buoyancy and resistance for an efficient full-body session. The experience includes mindful sampling of light, nourishing refreshments, followed by time in a warm indoor pool. The pool is maintained at 92 degrees and offers ramp or stair entry. Amenities include bathrooms, changing rooms, poolside rest areas, certified lifeguards, and a hot tub for a relaxing soak after the workout. The facility may have additional infection-control steps and intake paperwork. What to bring and wear: a notepad and pencil, water bottle, towels, a swimsuit with water shoes, toiletries for showering, a change of clothes, a lock, and a bag for wet items. Wearing your swimsuit under a cover-up or comfortable exercise clothing helps you move easily and transition quickly to the pool. Walking or athletic shoes are required for land activities, and water shoes are recommended in the water. A brief break is planned before entering the pool. Swimming skills are not required since the aquatic portion is a standing workout, and participants may choose shallow or deep water. Individuals who need assistance in the pool may bring a dedicated helper to stay by their side at no cost. This masterclass is educational and not a substitute for physical therapy. Those currently in physical therapy treatment or without clearance for community exercise should not participate. Plan to arrive early to pick up a parking pass for Timpany Center lots. Mask use is optional. Wet masks can make breathing difficult in the pool, so remove or replace a wet mask and consider keeping a spare in a waterproof container at the pool edge. About the instructor: Dr. Jen PT, also known as Jennifer Sylvester, is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, aquatic therapy specialist, and Master Aquatic Fitness Trainer with more than 20 years of teaching experience. She earned her DPT at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and operates a concierge physical therapy and wellness practice in Silicon Valley, using a holistic approach to help people manage pain and chronic conditions so they can stay active.

In 1973, The World Is a Ghetto topped both the pop and R&B charts on Billboard, driven by two top 10 singles, the socially aware title track and The Cisco Kid.
