Goldfish Swim School - Santa AnaARCE: The Middle Kingdom Funerary Garden at Dra Abu el-Naga, the Stele of Moskhion, and Greek Stoikh
At the Bowers Museum in the Norma Kershaw Auditorium, Dr. Patricia A. Butz presents a lecture tracing a cross-cultural link between ancient Egypt and Greece through their shared use of grids and gridded texts. The talk explains the Greek concept of stoikhedon, the orderly row and column layout for alphabetic inscriptions that emerged in the late sixth century BCE, and frames it as a dynamic idea shaped by Egyptian models. In Egypt, grid systems guided garden design and water management, a practice seen in Old Kingdom tomb imagery and reinforced by the 2017 discovery of a gridded funerary garden at Luxor led by Dr. José Galán. Drawing on the bilingual Stele of Moschion, the presentation connects modular units, or stoikoi, in Egyptian agriculture to the way letterforms traverse magical grids, echoing the movement of water through cultivated plots. This is a ticketed program with free admission for Bowers and ARCE members and a $15 general ticket. A recorded online screening is also available, free for Bowers and ARCE members and $10 for general audiences, with access emailed to ticketholders one week after the onsite program. Celebrate Mom with creative time by the ocean at the Surf City Artisan Fair in Huntington Beach Pier Plaza. Paint a graceful koi on a prepared wood panel, then finish it with a glossy resin coat to create a handmade keepsake that is ready to gift or display. Koi are commonly associated with luck and good fortune, making this project a meaningful choice for anyone. No experience is required. A professional artist and experienced instructor guides each step at an easy pace. The panel is prepped ahead of time so you can jump right into the fun part. Trace the fish using provided stencils to remove the guesswork, then bring it to life with color and clear instruction suitable for beginners and seasoned artists alike. After the painting portion, enjoy a short break to stretch, sip a beverage, browse the artisan fair, or take in the ocean views. Next comes the resin phase, where you will learn how to mix and pour for a smooth, elevated finish. The artwork will be covered with foil to protect the surface while it cures. All supplies are included, such as the prepared panel, acrylic paints, brushes, stencils, resin, mixing tools, gloves, and an apron, along with attentive instruction. Wear clothes that can handle a little splatter, bring water to stay refreshed, and consider a snack or money for nearby food vendors. The resin needs about a day to set. Take the covered piece home, keep it level while it cures, and enjoy a beautiful, finished artwork the next day.

Santa Ana ObservatoryReading the Material Evidence in American Quilts with Tara Miller | Opening Lecture
At the Bowers Museum’s Norma Kershaw Auditorium, guest curator Tara Miller opens an exploration of American quilts as records of commerce, industry, and community. Drawing on pieces from the exhibition, the talk highlights how a wool whole cloth from 1776 reflects boycotts and home production. Chintz appliqué follows cotton grown by enslaved people across the Atlantic to Britain and back again. Vivid greens tinted with arsenic illustrate how industrial chemistry broadened the quiltmaker’s color choices. Depression-era quilting bees organized through newspapers reveal how entrepreneurs and mass media reshaped quilt commerce in difficult years. Fabric from feed sacks conveys the hardships faced by sharecropping families in rural Alabama. A pictorial California quilt created in 1975 by nineteen women from Orange County embodies the Great Quilt Revival, restoring quilting as a creative, communal, and culturally meaningful art. This is a ticketed program with admission priced at $15 for members and $20 for the general public. A recorded online screening is also offered at $5 for members and $10 for the general public, with viewing access sent to ticketholders after the onsite event and available on demand for a 24-hour window.

Irvine ImprovBirds, Bison and Belonging
At the Jackson Hole Birding Festival in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Indigenous leader Lisa Marie Ansell Frazier shares Birds, Bison, and Belonging, a program that connects prairie restoration with the resurgence of birds and buffalo. Drawing on Indigenous ecological knowledge, seventh-generation stewardship, and direct work in bison restoration, she traces how healthier food systems and renewed relationships with land can revive culture and community. Through stories from the Buffalo Youth Nation Project, the talk highlights birds as markers of prairie well-being and views the return of buffalo as a sign of healing across land, foodways, and people. The conversation reimagines conservation as an act of remembering our reciprocal ties to place, with an emphasis on ecological, cultural, and spiritual balance for the generations to come. Frazier is the founder and director of the Native-led Buffalo Youth Nation Project, which advances food sovereignty, youth nourishment, cultural renewal, and the restoration of bison herds through community programs and culturally grounded education.

At Irvine Barclay Theatre, the Reines Lecture Series hosts Nobel Laureate Dr. Adam Riess for a public talk on the evolving story of cosmic expansion and the puzzle of dark energy. Building on Edwin Hubble’s 1929 finding that space is stretching, and using observations from the Hubble Space Telescope, Dr. Riess explains how his team identified that the expansion is speeding up, what the evidence shows, and why pinning down the nature of dark energy remains one of the biggest open questions in astrophysics and cosmology. He will also share recent results indicating that the universe continues to challenge current predictions. Dr. Riess is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor and the Thomas J. Barber Professor at Johns Hopkins University, a distinguished astronomer at the Space Telescope Science Institute, and a member of the National Academy of Sciences. His research uses supernovae and Cepheid variables to refine the cosmic distance scale and the Hubble constant, and he leads the SHOES collaboration alongside the Higher-z effort to discover and study very distant Type Ia supernovae that illuminate the origin of cosmic acceleration. His contributions include a leading role in the High-z Supernova Search Team that revealed the accelerating universe, work recognized with the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 and honors such as the Albert Einstein Medal, a MacArthur Fellowship, the Gruber Cosmology Prize, and the Shaw Prize. The Reines Lecture Series honors Frederick Reines, founding dean of physical sciences at UC Irvine and co-recipient of the 1995 Nobel Prize for the discovery of the neutrino.
