Cotton, Cloth, and Community: Alabama Quilting Traditions
Presented by the Gorgas House Museum, UA Museums, and the Barefield College of Arts & Sciences, this exhibition celebrates quilting traditions from across Alabama in the Moore-Wilson Gallery at the Catherine and Pettus Randall Welcome Center. Highlights include The Bicentennial Quilt by Yvonne Wells, created to commemorate Tuscaloosa’s 200th anniversary, a quilt on loan from Charlotte Nix of the West Alabama Quilters’ Guild, and a piece made by University of Alabama students. The exhibition also underscores the longstanding connection between The University of Alabama and the quilters of Gee’s Bend, featuring four distinctive quilts that reflect internationally recognized artistry and a legacy tied to the Civil Rights movement. A panel from the Alabama Museum of Natural History adds context about the environmental history of cotton in the state, with support from the University’s Department of Art and Art History in shaping the gallery experience.
