This vegan-friendly dinner spotlights Indian street food and creative fusion at Curry Up Now Birmingham, the brand’s first location in Alabama. The concept began with a husband-and-wife food truck nearly two decades ago and has since grown to more than a dozen restaurants across six states. The focus is on plant-based choices, with several dedicated vegan dishes and the option to have other items prepared vegan on request. Examples include a burrito filled with samosas, chana masala, turmeric rice, pickled onions, and chutneys, a deconstructed bowl with the same components, a bowl featuring vegan chick’n with turmeric rice plus homestyle daal or chana masala, a tandoori-style sandwich made with vegan chick’n and an aioli seasoned with Bombay dust, sides such as samosas and aloo gobi with assorted chutneys, and papdi crisps topped with guacamole.

Tuesday Night Trails

At Red Mountain Park, this hour-long trail session offers six pace-based groups so every participant can run, walk, or hike at a comfortable level. The fastest option covers about 6 to 7 miles at roughly an eight-minute pace with no walking, suited to experienced runners who want to work the hills. A steady intermediate group runs about 5 miles near ten minutes per mile with a brief regroup. Another lively option tackles around 4.5 miles at approximately 11 to 12 minutes per mile for a solid effort without turning it into a race. Additional choices emphasize ease and community. A 4-mile group moves at about a 12-minute pace, running flats and descents, walking climbs, and regrouping when needed. A beginner-friendly option goes about 3 miles at a similar pace with more breaks, mixing plenty of walking on hills with relaxed running on flats. A brisk walk and hike group covers about 2.75 miles, sometimes staying on the BMRR South Trail for a flatter route and other times heading toward the old mines and along Ike Maston for extra elevation. Group leaders and sweepers help participants find the right fit and ensure no one is left behind, creating a welcoming experience for both seasoned runners and those just getting started.

SUMMER OF SPIKE: Crooklyn (1994)

Sidewalk Cinema continues its Summer of Spike series, a season dedicated to the films of Spike Lee. This screening spotlights Crooklyn (1994), following Brooklyn grade-schooler Troy Carmichael, played by Zelda Harris, as she grows up alongside her four brothers while her mother, Carolyn, a teacher portrayed by Alfre Woodard, and her father, Woody, a jazz musician played by Delroy Lindo, manage the strain of monthly bills. Sent reluctantly to stay with an aunt in the South for part of the summer, Troy returns to a bustling neighborhood and learns that a loved one is seriously ill.
