Long Lining/Dressage lessons with Tom McManus

Long lining and dressage instruction with Tom McManus, based in Chelsea, Alabama, is available with a daily schedule that accommodates up to eight 45 minute lessons. Each session is $60, payable directly to Tom. Trailering in is $15 per horse and rider per day. A small number of stalls can be booked through the facility with rates of $15 for day use, $20 for overnight, or $25 overnight including one wheelbarrow of shavings. Please plan to bring your own water buckets and a pitchfork. Tom is an upper level competitor, trainer, and instructor who teaches classical principles to riders of any breed. His approach emphasizes clear communication, a secure and correct position, and understanding not only what to do but also why, when, and how. He focuses on details that elevate the whole picture so riders leave feeling confident about practicing on their own, and horses learn aids consistently to become reliable partners. He offers training for horse and rider through the levels to Grand Prix and helps riders launch show careers or progress to advanced work. Many of his students have gone on to become professional trainers and instructors. He teaches thoroughly, builds solid foundations without quick fixes, and looks for the root cause when addressing challenges. Private and semi private lessons are available. His background includes early experience with Standardbred racehorses, an assistant trainer’s license as a teenager, and study with Joan Hunt of England. He performed with the Royal Lipizzaner Stallion show, advancing to a starring role and training the Airs above the Ground while touring extensively across the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, and Argentina. He later trained at Shilo Arabians in Indiana with success at regional and national levels, managed Cranmar Arabians in Pittsburgh with national results, and imported Straight Egyptian horses from Cairo to Europe and the United States. With more than five decades in classical dressage, he is now based in the Birmingham, Alabama area with a special focus on Arabians, and he has learned from horsemen such as Ernst Herrmann, Yoshi Kinoshita, Brian Ross, Nuno Olivera, and Donita Konyot. To reserve lesson times or arrange stalls, contact Shiloh Farms and Kat Klemm at 205-966-7030. For stall reservations, Katrin Klemm can also be reached at the same number. For additional questions, Tom can be contacted at 205-908-0137.
